Conun-drummin’

STAND BACKWhy do I suck at studying?

No seriously…why? What is it that distracts me? Why do I find myself staring into space and falling asleep all the time? Less than 2 weeks into the semester and I am ALREADY PULLING AN ALL NIGHTER. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD sign.

Okay, I’m opening this to the floor now: how do you study? Where do you study? How long do you study? Do you take breaks? Do you use flash cards? Do you shut off the internet or leave it on? Do you listen to music? Can you focus on something for more than 10 minutes without your body forcing you to look away (yeah, I can’t do that. Yes, it sucks)?

Not sure when I get to see Xiaoxiao again either… if you are reading this, I hope that your lab work is going well!

Your daily distraction

It’s not COMPLETELY impossible… but it will frustrate the living hell out of you.

Chicken and its many forms

HONK IF YOU LIKE GEESEBefore I talk about life, here’s an announcement for you!

Worry VS. Donuts has hired (can we call it hired if they work for free?) a small, pink bird to be an advice columnist. I’m dead serious. Do you have problems? Girl trouble? Can’t get the TV to work? Did your cat start singing the Greatest Hits of James Brown to you? WE CAN HELP. E-mail: gege at worry vs donuts dot COM. Yes, it’s a silly idea, but hey - if my friends can get married on Facebook three times in one month, a pink bird can give advice. Yes, that logic works. Don’t look at me that way. *ahem* Ah yes, ranting about life… (Read the article)

TERATA DESU

Beckham and Bears

My 2 cen...er, 100 yenSunday I found myself speeding through yet another winter storm en route to Chicago. Xiaoxiao was arriving from Wuhan, so I went to O’Hare to pick her up. Little did I know that I would pay witness to an interesting cultural event of sorts.

What event you say? American Football, that’s what.

Your 2AM Serving of Mostly Pointless Childish Humor

THEY LIVE IN YOUR MIND.You’ve been warned.

This one is for anyone who grew up in the 90’s. The source: a truck I saw on the highway somewhere in Wyoming. Thanks to the modern miracle of Cruise Control (and an empty highway), I was able to snap a pic.

The Open Road, like a hammer to the noggin

Nebraskaaaaaaaaaaaaa, exciting and new...Allo there!

Last night, the open road and I had another 4 1/2 hour conversation (punctuated with snow flakes and patches of ice) as I travelled from Minneapolis back to Madison for my second semester of Grad School. Since I was feeling bored, I decided to try one of the “alternative” routes suggested by Google Maps to see if it was any faster.

WELCOME!

DramaconHello everyone! Welcome to the all new Worry VS. Donuts. Specifically, WORRY VERSUS DONUTS DOT COM. The title makes it sound so… spiffy. Yes, there are still lots of bugs that need to be worked out, but anyways, HERE IS BLOG. If you want to know more about what this blog is about, click the “About” link. Yep, it’s just that simple.
This page represents a kind of personal project for me. My old blog was swell (I still think the cheesy donut background rocks…), but I felt that LiveJournal was kind of limiting me. So, why did I leave LiveJournal?

First off: I love the whole “locking posts” feature on LJ, and I will probably still use it from time to time to send announcements out over LJ about events in certain areas and stuff like that. However, on the whole I felt it was kind of encouraging me to treat the blog more like a punching bag/rant center, where I would go to scream when times were rough. That’s nice, but when I need to vent, most of the time I find it is much more reasonable to just PICK UP THE PHONE and call people. As a society, we have gone to great lengths to make sure everyone has a cell phone so we can all be “closer” to one another. Why, then, do some of us choose to do our ranting on a cold, impersonal webpage? Bleh. If I really need help, I would rather “reach out and touch someone” than click my refresh button over and over.

GEGESecond: My friends are cool. But some of them don’t use LJ. They use Xanga, CyWorld, MSN Spaces, Naver, Exblog, or just run it themselves. This way, everyone can waste time reading my babble if they want! LET US UNIFY THE BLOGS OF THE WORLD AND RID OURSELVES OF THE BONDS OF DIGITAL OPPRESSION! FREE AT LA…. *ahem* Sorry. Anyways, links to all of your blogs will be posted here in the near future.
Third: For a long time, I’ve been wanting to make my blog a bit more random. Currently, I am a grad student with a job. Job and school keep me pretty busy, so sometimes I spend weeks doing the same thing, rendering the “Here’s what Jariten did today” type of blogging format mostly useless. It’s not like I can rant about my breakfast cereal (though I will say right now that Honey Graham Life is pretty damn tasty).

In short, interspersed between the usual blog stuff, expect to see reviews, art stuff, random links… perhaps even something like a novel (run and hide now).

And finally, this kind of a format lets me promote YOU. I feel truly lucky to know the talented, gifted people that I have the privilege of calling friends. If you write, do art, or something like that, I will link to it. I will post entries about it and say how neat it is. Sure, it won’t get out to a huge audience, but I’ll still link it. Pimping, linking, promoting, pointing my finger and screaming… call it what you like.

Finally, a big thank you to Matt for helping me set this up and getting the neato icon bar running. WHEE.
Umm… that’s all for now. Comments are always open but on delayed post, so don’t panic if you post something and it doesn’t show up right away.
