Resolute in the ‘09

CHOO CHOOOOOOOAs far as great American past times go, few are as simultaneously honored and disregarded as the New Years Resolution. Since this webpage (blog, chicken scratch… whatever) is tied to one of my resolutions for 2009, I figured I would muse publicly upon some of the things I’m “resolve-ing” for this year. I’m pretty sure that many of you don’t care, but hey - if you’re here, you’re obviously aiming to kill some time. On we go to the page cut: (Read the article)

The WVD Election Day (semi)-Live Blog

Kitty voted.

12:47 PST: Good afternoon, and welcome to the Election Day blog. Yeah, a funny thing to do when I haven’t touched this thing in months, but what the hell. I’m coming to you from the desk of the Pacific Tradewinds Backpackers Hostel in San Francisco, California. Fun place. Since it’s pretty obvious what we’re pulling for here (No on Prop 8, Obama, fluffy kittens for every American), this blog will mostly focus on the character of people here in the Common Room chatting about the election and life. Ah, there’s the phone. Someone looking for a guest.

Of course, I’m going to be doing 4 other things while doing this, so if there’s no other updates… that’s why.

RESULTS: None yet. Phooey.

Conversation: we’re talking about how SF will respond if Obama wins or loses. We’re expecting lots of parties if Obama wins, and if he loses… well, we’re preparing for some kind of riot. I’m no good at gun battles, so I guess I just got another reason to root for Obama.

2:51 PM PST: Still waiting for results… but the laundry is done, so no complaints there.

The locals are planning on heading to a bar somewhere to watch the results come in - we don’t have a TV here in the hostel.

It’s quiet, so I’m going to take this chance to call Lanny.

7PM PST: As things go Obama’s way, the common room is full of people checking laptops. Ironically, the people who are glued to their laptops most are people from overseas, eager to see how the USA decides this thing. There’s a lone McCain supporter among them; a Japanese woman who thinks that he looks “cooler.” I did my best to explain what Americans think “cool” means to her in Japanese, but I’m not sure if I changed her mind…

People are heading to the bar soon. Things are about to get a lot quieter here.

In Transit

Currently moving. A less messed-up update is coming soon!

So, how was YOUR weekend?

Yes, Mr. Rather? No, you can't come over for thanksgiving. You always hog the stuffing.Did you faint? Did you name a turkey?

You didn’t? Wow, you are missing out!

Donut Status

FIGHT!!! FOR EVERLASTING A GRADES!Uh… hi. I’m not dead. In fact, I have been working on the entries below… (all 4 of them - that’s right, 4 new things up today! Go read them! They’re full of words!) in fact, the first Mappy Award feature has been in the queue for about 7 months. Really. Sad, huh? I’ve just been working on them during 5-minute study/work breaks over a LONG period of time.

Which reminds me of another important detail: the semester has restarted and so my time has vanished into a sea of coffee beverages and reading assignments. This will, of course, affect how often I post here, but I plan to keep posting since it helps me maintain sanity (whatever sanity implies is up to you…).

So: for those of you who want to don’t want to read about the exciting life of the author, skip down to the next entries. The rest of you may move your mouse closer to these words and click the text that says (Read the article)

Trucks, Rain, Expenses

LET'S ALL MOVE ON THE SAME DAY.The AnimeIowa posts will follow this one. - Ed.

Dear Madison, WI:

We need to talk. I know, I know…that sounds really bad. But we need to chat. Don’t think I have any less love for you - I enjoy all your charming, fun qualities. Hell, I can even appreciate the drunks on State Street for mere entertainment value. However, there’s a serious disservice you are doing to your student population every year in the middle of August. Don’t walk away from me - you know what I’m talking about: Moving Day and Homeless Night. (Read the article)

Intermission(二語で)

What evil lurks in the hearts of men? The kitty knows...今日は日本語・英語を合わせてカキコします。特ですね。

OKAY, posting in two languages today. We’ll start with… English.

I’m between conventions now and, quite frankly, I can’t believe how tired I am. Even after 6 hours of sleep, I’ve been droopy all day. I came home after visiting House on the Rock with Soo Young and Melanie and pretty much passed out on the bed after I tumbled through the door. Still, it was a fun day trip that had nothing to do with conventions, so yay for that. Next weekend is Otakon. As for Anime Expo, I finished the last of the transcriptions on Monday. I can’t help but feel I’m going too slow… but then again, I have nothing to compare my work to and the only feedback I get is “you’re doing fine,” so I guess I should stop whining. :p

And then we change the languages just like こんな風に

Mickey would be less fine if he neglected his hygiene, I bet.Quick update before I go back to catching up on work:

I’ve arrived in Santa Monica. The city is, as always, an interesting place to be. I’m staying at the HI-Santa Monica which is fantastic thus far. Since I don’t have many plans for the next week, I plan to spend my time working, enjoying the scenery, and maybe even taking in a hostel event or two.

Hotels, although nicer, are BORING. Hostels have a lot of life, there’s stuff happening all the time, and I always run into interesting people and find myself chatting about all sorts of weird stuff. I’ve always wanted to join in one of the hostel events that are always happening, but never had the time. Although I have lots of work to do, I should have an opportunity or two to join some events.

My schedule for the next few weeks, for the curious/stalkers:

Today-Saturday, 6/23: Santa Monica
6/23-6/27: San Diego
6/27-7/3: Long Beach, AnimeExpo, work, potential hilarity
7/4-not sure: Minneapolis and CONvergence

EDIT: The car was fixed. Final repair bill: $2007 and change. Apparently the repairs involved removing the entire dash of the car (steering panel, gages, stereo, everything) and fiddling with wires and switches for six hours.

I spent most of last night playing Babanuki with some random students from Japan and Italy. They forced the losers to dance. Interesting hostel experience attained.

Car Go Boom, Kinda

Nowhere indeed...Quite a month we’re having here. First the computer, now the car. Methinks I’m going to have to generate $3000 magically somehow.

Before I whine about that, though, some announcements:

Many, many thanks to Jo and Lxri for visiting me in Madison. VISITORS = SWELL. Anyways, I know that this thank you is a bit late, but I figured I would post it anyways because I am really thankful for having the company.

See Ocean’s Thirteen. It was snazzy. More on that later.

You damn kids and your “expo” - I leave for California next Wednesday (6/20) and will be bumming around LA and San Diego before going to Long Beach the following Tuesday for a week of anime, interpreting, and all the other joy associated with AnimeExpo. If anyone reading this will be in LA between the 20th and 23rd or San Diego between the 24th and 26th and you want to hang out, let me know. Otherwise, I plan to spend the time before the con sipping Bubble Tea and working on ANN translations. That might not sound like bliss, but trust me - it’s not a terrible way to spend the day.
Okay, the car: (Read the article)
